Roulette in plain English

The dealer spins a wheel one way and a ball the other. The ball drops into one numbered pocket. You bet on where it lands. This is the American (double-zero) wheel — 38 pockets: 1–36 plus a green 0 and 00.

Inside bets (the numbers & the lines between them)

Bet directly on numbers — or "bridge" several at once by dropping a chip on the lines and corners between them:

• Straight up (1 number) → 35:1
• Split (2 numbers, on the line between them) → 17:1
• Street (3 numbers, on the outer edge of a row) → 11:1
• Corner (4 numbers, where they all meet) → 8:1
• Six-line (6 numbers, the corner between two streets) → 5:1

Hover the grid and the legal line/corner spots light up gold. Wider coverage means a smaller payout — but the house edge is an identical 5.26% on every one of them.

Outside bets (the boxes around the grid)

• Red / Black, Odd / Even, 1–18 / 19–36 → even money (1:1). Closest thing to a coin flip… except for the green pockets.
• Dozens & Columns (1st/2nd/3rd 12, or the three "2 to 1" rows) → pay 2:1.

Why the house always wins

A straight-up number should pay 37:1 to be fair (37 ways to lose, 1 to win). The casino only pays 35:1. That gap — created entirely by the 0 and 00 — is a 5.26% edge on essentially every bet. On a European single-zero wheel it's only 2.70%; the extra green pocket here doubles your cost.

The one bet to never make

The five-number bet (0-00-1-2-3) is the only wager with a worse edge: 7.89%. The coach will keep you off it.
